Clinton Foundation admits to mistakes on foreign funds, denies it tried to conceal them
The Clinton Foundation has admitted mistakes were made in the reporting of foreign governments grants for tax purposes but disputed allegations that it tried to conceal them.
The organization also said it went beyond and over what was required to prevent a conflict of interest while Hillary Clinton served as secretary of state in the Obama administration.
"So yes, we made mistakes, as many organizations of our size do, but we are acting quickly to remedy them," wrote Maura Pally, the foundation's acting CEO in a blog on Sunday.
But, she stressed, "while some have suggested that this indicates a failure to accurately report our total revenue, that is not the case." They were just not identified as such.
"Our total revenue was accurately reported on each year's form - our error was that government grants were mistakenly combined with other donations."
The foundation will re-file returns correcting that mistake.
Recent news reports and an upcoming book have said a Russian company was allowed to take over a company owning uranium mines in the US on Clinton's watch as secretary of state.
The New York Times, which broke that story through its own reporting based on allegations in the book, has said it did not find anything linking Clinton to the deal.
Foreign funds for the foundation, started by former president Bill Clinton, have come under increased scrutiny since Hillary Clinton announced she was running for president.
Questions were raised about her use of private email ID as secretary of state. She has since turned over to the government all correspondence from that ID, after deleting private mails.
She also addressed that issue at a news conference earlier.
About foreign donations and her term at state, the foundation said it "took unprecedented steps to avoid potential conflicts of interest", including disclosing all donations on the website.
